The pure, peaceful presence emanating from a person that you could almost touch. An energy so present, that it resets your whole nervous system from just being in the same space as this person.

Walk of PeaceI have been reminded of this feeling by the journey of several Buddhist monks who are quietly walking from Fort Worth, Texas to Washington D.C. Their Walk for Peace is a living example of the practice of peace, compassion, kindness and the quiet, yet expansive, presence that results from this practice.

They are scheduled to arrive in Washington around February 10. During their 2,300-mile journey they have captured the hearts of millions of people by pure example of the practice of kindness, compassion and peaceful presence as they walk. Thousands of people are lining the streets along their route to say thank you and to be reminded of the heart’s yearning for peaceful presence.

These monks are resetting the nervous systems of millions of people (and maybe an entire country) with their example.

What if that person is you? Peaceful presence can shift your nervous system, your body, a whole room, anyone around you and ultimately, the universal field we all live in.

The Science

How do you connect with the peaceful presence that lives within you? It all starts with your heart.

In their book, “Energize Your Heart,” authors Puran and Susanna Bair state:

“The human heart contains the greatest power on earth; it can potentially operate the universe to create the conditions and experiences it needs, but when blocked, the energy of the heart cannot project into the world…Because the heart rate encodes the emotional state, it is literally true that the emotion of the heart is broadcast throughout the physical body as the pulse causes every cell to throb. As the cells pick up the heartbeat they adjust themselves to the current emotional condition. Therefore, emotion is felt everywhere at once: all your cells sing when you’re happy, and physical discomfort is widespread when you’re emotionally miserable.”

Scientists are also discovering how the heart communicates through the electromagnetic field through and surrounding the body.

Researchers at HeartMath Institute have discovered and measured emotional information from the heart in the biofield. In the ebook from HeartMath called “Science of the Heart, Vol. 2” scientists state:

“Information about a person’s emotional state is encoded in the heart’s magnetic field and is communicated throughout the body and into the external environment…experiments have led us to conclude that the nervous system acts as an antenna, which is tuned to and responds to the magnetic fields produced by the hearts of other individuals…We also propose that this type of energetic communication between individuals may play a role in the therapeutic interactions between clinicians and patients that has the potential to promote the healing process.”

When a person is in a coherent state, they receive more accurate information from the fields of others. You are also transmitting coherence, peace, kindness, compassion to others.

Sharon’s Story

Let me share with you a story when Ed and I were completely lost in traffic. We had just finished a weekend workshop in Vancouver. We were tired and hungry and made the decision to drive part way out of the city before stopping for dinner.

Ed was driving and being unfamiliar with Vancouver and the road system there, we ended up completely lost and driving in circles for about an hour. The more lost we got, the more frustrated and angry he got. And that just made it worse.

So, to avoid spending another hour driving in circles, I started to slow down my breath and focus on my heart. As I continued to settle my awareness into my heart, a soft calm flowed through my body. Sitting beside Ed in the passenger seat, I consciously flowed the soft calm into my field with the intention to calm the frustrated static in Ed’s field beside me.

After a few minutes, as the calm energy began to shift his mood, both of us noticed the street sign at the corner we had just reached. It was Marine Drive, the exact way out of the city centre that we were looking for.

Peaceful Presence is a Practice

Peaceful presence is who you are at your core. It sits in your heart, waiting patiently for you to notice that it is there. Connecting with and emanating peaceful presence is a practice.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to build the consistence and strength of my own inner peace and calm presence.

  • Heart – Brain Coherence

  • Be Quiet

Take a few deep breaths and reconnect with the present moment. Your spiritual self thrives when you are living your life in the moment. With each conscious breath you access presence, authenticity and compassion. Practices that help you create inner quiet are mindfulness, meditation, gentle movement, like yoga or qigong, and contemplation.

  • Community

The most powerful way to maintain your connection with your peaceful presence is in community.
