Chaos is an essential part of the process of re-organizing an organism into a higher level of order or harmony. The Dark Night of the Soul is a spiritual crisis where your entire ego-based belief systems are disintegrated. To claim our spiritual essence, we pass through a gauntlet of meaninglessness, hopelessness, and helplessness. This is meant to spark a search for the place within that lights up our being with grace.
Right now, our entire human family is experiencing a collective dark night of the soul. We are in a collective place of crisis with many serious issues gnawing at our souls.
Dr. Ilya Prigogine, a Nobel Prize winning chemist, was renowned for his discovery that chaos in chemical systems could result in a re-organization into a higher level of order. This was a fascinating discovery that is actually reflected in nature and in us as a part of nature.
A wonderful example of this is the process a caterpillar transmuting into a butterfly. Here is a graphic description from Scientific American of the process:
“First, the caterpillar digests itself, releasing enzymes to dissolve all of its tissues. Certain highly organized groups of cells known as imaginal discs survive the digestive process…Once a caterpillar has disintegrated all of its tissues except for the imaginal discs, those discs use the protein-rich soup all around them to fuel the rapid cell division required to form the wings, antennae, legs, eyes, genitals and all the other features of an adult butterfly or moth.”
This change is happening at every level of our being. It is being supported by the enormous chaos going on around us. Our individual and collective belief systems are being completely disintegrated and re-examined as we shift our individual identity from the personality to the soul.
Collectively we are also seeing how deeply we are connected with each other, even as individual souls. We are becoming more present to the destructive or constructive power of our emotional states.
Especially the destructive nature of fear. The amplification of fear we are experiencing and have experienced over the past year is destroying individual health and wellbeing and our connection with families and communities. I have shared many times in this blog how powerfully extended fear and stress destroys health.
I invite you to take a deep breath and a moment to view the fear from the perspective of observing fear, rather than being fear. Become curious. Curiosity is one of your greatest gifts. It sparks potential and possibility like nothing else can. As you focus your curiosity on fear, a different picture may begin to form.
Observe the uncomfortable feelings of helplessness and hopelessness and how they show up in your life. Observe your thought patterns with curiosity and a keen eye for despair or control or hope.
Feeling helpless, hopeless and that there is little meaning drives many people and larger systems into control. What little things we are able to control gives us the feeling that we are not so helpless.
As children, we are all taught responsibility in many ways. The chaos around us stirs our soul voice to ask the question, ‘Where is the meaning in my life?’
Spark the hero’s journey in your heart. This is where your superpower lies.
As we awaken to the power each of us has, it is also a time of taking responsibility for our thoughts, emotions and energy and how it contributes to the whole.
We are opening to the intuitive abilities that are present when we identify and become a home to the soul.
We are becoming aware of and connecting to the brilliance and expansive nature of the collective mind, rather than the limited individual mind.
Like the caterpillar, the imaginal discs have always been present. They are not yet expressed. And, like DNA, all of the information is already there.
You are a seed of the new structures, expanded capacity and potential that is part of our collective destiny. It is time to sprout the seeds.
