Increasing the calm in your life involves emotional management. Your thoughts and emotions merge into nervous system response with the release of hormones that either stimulate your sympathetic (stress)or parasympathetic (calm) nervous system response. This is how your thoughts become physically a part of you. Like a knot in your stomach, tension in your shoulders or irritable digestion. Everything is connected.
Emotions are your life energy. They are the fire of life. They can make you feel free and exhilarated or they can make you feel stuck. In this blog, we dive into how sound and music can support managing emotional energy. When emotions go off the rails, sound and music can help bring us back to our centre.
To explore further how sound and music can support our emotional and physical health, let’s look at three main elements:
- Music
- Sound Tools
- Your Voice
1. Music
How can music help support creating calm?
Not many people know that when you walk into your local grocery store where there is music playing, it takes only minutes for your heartbeat to match the beat of the music. There is no off switch to this response. It works whether or not you’re paying any attention to the music.
Much of the music played in stores is designed to put you in a mood to buy! A study reported in the Journal of Marketing found that playing slow music in grocery stores increased sales by 40%!
This process is called entrainment. Your heartbeat is affected by the rhythm of the music. This takes about five minutes. Your altered heartbeat then affects your breathing rhythm and your brainwave state. These three systems are intimately connected. When you affect one of them, you affect all three.
There is a great deal of music that has been specifically designed to reduce stress, increase productivity, maintain focus, stimulate the immune system, enhance creativity and more.
You can find great music options by searching for “60 beats per minute” on YouTube or your favorite music streaming app. A relaxed heartbeat is around 60 beats per minute. When you play music at that speed, your heart automatically shifts into 60 beats per minute.
2. Sound Tools
Sound tools work directly with stimulating a state of calm or healing through the response of the nervous system and release of hormones.
Himalayan Singing bowls work like the restart button on your computer. Sometimes, when things just aren’t working on the computer, a restart is all it takes to get it humming along properly.
Your body and energetic field do the same thing with the right bowl.
As the sound travels through your body, it creates a movement that can loosen up emotional blocks allowing them to leave, loosen up tight muscles, dislodge the constant chatter in your mind, reduce pain and so much more.
When the sound stops, the body and field reset to their original healthy and harmonious state. This stimulates the natural, healing response of the body.
Tuning forks, particularly the perfect fifth tuning forks, are another sound tool that creates a powerful response in your body.
In 1998, three research scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine when they discovered the nitric oxide cycle and its importance in cardiovascular health. Research since then has expanded the understanding of this tiny molecule and its function in keeping us healthy.
Nitric oxide is a tiny molecule with an enormous job. It functions as a signalling molecule and is involved in almost every cellular and organ function in your body.
Experiments with the perfect fifth set of tuning forks showed that the sound consistently stimulated the production naturally in the cells in less than 30 seconds. That is powerful sound medicine!

3. Your voice
Your voice carries every frequency of your body. Your voice resonates every cell of your body with every sound that you make. You have it with you all the time and it costs you nothing to use. And the best part, it creates an instant response in the body, mind, emotions and spiritual connection.
Consider the sounds that flow naturally from your body without even thinking about it, like: Ahh, what a cute puppy; Ahh, that feels good; Ooo, how interesting; Uhh, that’s heavy.
Can you imagine how much more it would hurt when you stubbed your toe if you didn’t say ouch? Moans and groans are sounds that come from the body instinctively. You use the natural voice of the body to discharge your excess emotional energy and the stress it brings on with a big sigh.
All of these natural sounds of the body actually stimulate the brain to release neurochemicals and endorphins that help the body heal itself or manage pain.
Your voice can also be used to reduce pain significantly, heal injury, balance your chakras, bring your entire being into harmony, heal others, connect you to your deepest inspiration, energetically clear your environment and so much more.
Your voice connected with your thought and intention is powerful beyond measure!
When Emotions get Stuck
When it comes to stuck emotional energy, sometimes a different approach is needed. Releasing stuck emotional energy requires movement. One way of creating movement is to move your body, as in running, walking, yoga, chi gong or any of many ways to exercise.
Sometimes releasing emotional energy needs movement within the cells of the body, the nervous system or biofield. Many modalities of energy healing are really good at this kind of release, including sound healing. Sometimes the approach is a combination of exercise or moving the body and energy healing.
All emotions have a sound signature. This has been measured scientifically by Manfred Clynes. The sound signatures are called Sentic Forms. Sound, or vocalization, can be used to ‘unwind’ emotional energy.
We teach a process for unwinding emotions stuck in the body in our Fundamentals of Healing with Sound and Music course. It is such an effective, gentle and efficient way to work with this stuck emotional energy. This course is coming up from October 25 to 27.
