Did you know that plants can Sing! Imagine that!

gardenI have always loved gardens – creating them, working in them and watching things grow. Wherever our family has lived, I have always planted roses. They are one of my favorite flowers and will grow pretty well anywhere in the world.

About eight years ago, a friend of mine recommended a book called Garden Workbook by Machaelle Small Wright. She knew how much I love my gardens – especially the flower gardens.

This book was a real stretch for me at first. It teaches how to work with the consciousness of plants and flowers through devas, nature spirits and Pan. I was curious and willing to give it a try.

One of the biggest things I learned didn’t have anything to do with planting and seeds and flowers. It was all about reverence. These beings are conscious, including the plants and are treated with reverence in communicating with them.

I have learned many things in the eight years I have been working in my garden in this way. The plants, animals and insects in my gardens talk to me all the time. I just didn’t know how to listen or talk to them.

AntsFor example, if I see an anthill built around the roots of a plant and the ants are stressing the plant or killing it, I will determine if the plant would like to survive. If it does, then I will sit near the anthill and connect with the deva of the ants, the nature spirits who work with them and the ants themselves. I will explain to them – either by talking out loud or thinking clearly – that the plant wishes to thrive and that their home is creating stress to the plant. I will respectfully ask the ants to move their anthill – respectfully, because moving an anthill is a huge effort for these little beings – and sometimes suggest another location in the garden or yard where they can go. They usually move and balance is restored.

When I first started working with my gardens in this way, I thought it was a little hokey, but did it anyway because I believe in the intrinsic consciousness of all life. After eight years, my reverence continues to grow.

Recently, another friend gave me a book called The Secret Life of Plants by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird. The book is filled with scientific research and evidence of the consciousness of plants. Did you know that plants, especially yours, can tell what you are thinking? And there is decades of evidence and a few national television news shows where it was demonstrated live on the air.

One Japanese scientist even recorded one of his wife’s plants singing!! Imagine that! On page 43 in the book, it says: “As Mrs. Hashimoto assured the plant that she loved it, there was an instant response from the cactus. Transformed and amplified by Dr. Hashimoto’s electronic equipment, the sound produced by the plant was like the high-pitched hum of very-high-voltage wires heard from a distance, except that it was more like a song, the rhythm and tone being varied and pleasant, at times even warm and almost jolly.”

My reverence for the plant kingdom just moved up a few notches.
