As many of you know, I have been a musician all my life. Many of you also know that I am a physical empath, with a deep sensitivity to sound at all levels of my being.

For decades, I have had the beautiful sounds of the classical guitar flow through my being for many hours every day as I practiced and taught. I must say, with tongue in cheek, even wrong notes sound good on the classical guitar!

This life long journey with sound coursing through my being and a life long interest in methods of holistic healing, eventually brought me to exploring the ancient and fascinating fields of sound healing and sound therapy.

We are beginning to understand that at the atomic level of matter, everything is in vibration. And that includes us. Sound is vibrational energy. It travels in a wave and pushes molecules around as it moves. Including your atoms and molecules.

Sound moves at different speeds depending on what it is traveling through. Typically, the denser a material is, the faster sound moves through it because the molecules are closer together. sound travels through usSound moves through water about 4 times faster than through the air.

Because your body consists of about 70% water, sound goes through your flesh about 4½ times faster than it goes through the air, and through your bones about 12 times faster than through the air.

Sound is a very physical energy. Sound tools stimulate waves of sound flowing through you that set your atoms and molecules into a state of vibration. This vibration changes how your atoms and molecules had previously been vibrating. The right sound, for you, stimulates the natural healing response of your body.

The Tibetan and crystal singing bowls that began to find their way into my life had a profound effect as the sound moved through me. And each one had a different effect.

I reveled in the exquisite shower of frequencies from my old Tibetan singing bowls. The crystal singing bowls brought me to a whole new level of vibration and soul connection as they helped me to work even deeper than the Tibetan bowls.

My first experience with tuning forks came many years ago at Jonathan Goldman’s Sound Healing Intensive. perfect fifth tuning forksWe experienced the Perfect 5th tuning forks, tuned to C and G, and another set tuned to D# and A.

These sounds flowing through me created profound shifts. It was like my whole being was being specifically ‘tuned’ to these frequencies. I was amazed.

Tuning forks are not a new concept. The ancient Egyptians used a tuning fork in their most sacred ceremonies for spiritual growth and transformation.

Lately, there has been an explosion of tuning forks on the market.

These tools create such specific and profound effects. If you are drawn to working with tuning forks, do your homework. Learn about the different frequencies and what they do.

Two types of tuning forks I use almost every day are the Perfect fifth tuning fork set or the 128 Hz fork.

This Perfect fifth set consists of the musical note C tuned to 256 Hz, a frequency directly related to the frequency of the earth, and the musical note G tuned to 384 Hz creating the interval of a perfect fifth when they are sounded together. The interval of C to G spans 5 notes: C – D – E – F – G.

Nitric Oxide moleculeResearch conducted by Dr. John Beaulieu, music therapist and naturopathic doctor and Dr. George Stefano, neurologist, showed that these frequencies, and the 128 Hz fork, stimulated the production of nitric oxide in the body’s cells in LESS THAN 30 seconds.

This natural cycle in your cells is so important, that in 1998, three research scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine just discovering the natural nitric oxide cycle in our cells.
Since then, pharmaceutical companies have spent millions on creating a medication that stimulates the nitric oxide cycle, especially to help those with heart problems.
Normal nitric oxide production is inhibited by stress and illness among other things. Here is a list of the physical benefits when your cells are producing and releasing nitric oxide.

  • Relief from stress, more energy and stamina.
  • The autonomic nervous system is balanced, better clarity of mind, less depression.
  • Nitric oxide strengthens the immune system.
  • Circulation is improved.
  • Digestion is improved.

Most people feel a sense of grounding, or becoming more present, when they hear the Perfect 5th sound.
It’s like “Ahhh, that feels better!” You wouldn’t believe the number of times I have heard that when I have played these by people’s ears.

Actually having the forks in your hands and experiencing the sound flow through you is the most effective way to use them.

Some people also receive benefit from the recorded sound of the tuning forks. You can listen or download the sound of the Perfect 5th forks by clicking below.

If you would like to own your own tuning forks (listening to an mp3 recording will never be as powerful as playing these forks for yourself), they are available in our store. Click below to order.
Note that while many stores sell tuning forks as well, the quality is often mediocre at best. To get the most benefit from these forks, accuracy is very important.

Here are a few tips for using the Perfect fifth tuning forks.

1. How do I tap them?

You will need a rubber activator to tap them on. You can also tap them on your knees.

Striking the forks together or on a table or hard surface can damage them. Damaging these forks can change their frequency and thus their effectiveness.

Hold the forks by the stem or base only. It is the two tines of the fork that vibrate. If you touch them, the sound will stop.

For the Perfect 5th forks, hold one in each hand and tap them fairly vigorously on the rubber activator to activate their sound. You can also tap them on your knees.

I have placed a video for those new to tuning forks showing how to activate them properly.

2. What is the best way to listen to them?

When you work with any kind of sound therapy or sound healing, make sure that you have a clear intention of what you want the sound to do. Intention is the most important part.

Hold one fork in each hand and once they are sounding, hold one to each ear. Wait until the sound stops.

Once the sound has stopped, switch the forks so that each ear will now listen to the other fork. Each ear listens from a different side of the brain. Switching the forks can help to connect the hemispheres of the brain.
Tap the forks again and hold them to your ears until the sound stops.

3. How often do I need to use them?

Once a day, as described above is enough to stimulate the nitric oxide cycle.

If I have been rattled by something during my day, I will listen to them again to help settle me down again.

Put your forks in a place where you will remember to use them.

You can keep them on your desk at work, at home in the kitchen, on a shelf in your living room. Keep them handy. Remember that it only takes about 30 seconds for the sound to stimulate the production of nitric oxide in the body.

4. Will they help me sleep?

Each of us responds uniquely to sound and music. The sound of the Perfect 5th tuning forks will bring the nervous system into balance. I am certain that each of us has our own definition of what balance means to us.

I recommend that you find out how this type of sound therapy works for you. Does the sound help you relax? Does it energize you? Is your response different in the morning compared to the evening?

5. When is the best time to listen to them?

Listening to my set of Perfect fifth tuning forks is part of my morning routine, like brushing my teeth. It helps to set up my day with focus and clarity.

If at any time during the day, I get rattled or emotional, the sound helps to calm me down. If I am not feeling well, I use them two or three times throughout my day to boost my immune system.

6. How long should I listen to the sound?

Sound therapy or sound healing of any kind is extremely effective. However, use it in moderation. Sound affects us right down to the cellular level and sometimes our body needs time to process the effects of the sound. Overuse of sound healing can lead to stress on the nervous system. I will stop when I start to feel better. You need to also follow your intuition here.

7. How can I learn more about how to use these forks?

We teach how to use the Perfect 5th forks, the Otto forks, and several other tuning fork sets in our Sound Wellness courses.
