Most people believe that when you listen to a sound or a piece of music, you listen with your ears.
The truth is, you listen with your entire being!
Every sound you experience affects your entire being: Physical, Emotional, Mental, and Spiritual. I call this Listening from the Inside Out.
Your body listens with a change in heartbeat, breathing or brainwave state. Your body also listens by being relaxed or tense. Or the sound or music will create a sensation in a part of your body, like a knot in your stomach or a headache.
Your emotions listen with calm, uneasy, content, irritated, anxious, happy, sad or with a myriad of other emotional states.
Your mind listens by becoming quiet, clear or focused. Or the ‘90 mile an hour’ busy mind responds with distracted, scattered and captured by constant internal chatter.
Your spirit listens by responding with joy, peace, bliss, love, gratitude, happiness or compassion.
Why is all this important?
The World Health Organization has declared that stress is the epidemic of the 21st century. Stress is the root cause of 80 to 90% percent of ALL visits to the doctor.
Stress is our #1 health problem and most us have no idea how deeply stress is compromising our health.
You are as wired to respond to sound with the release of hormones that keep you healthy as you are wired for the fight or flight response (stress) with the release of hormones that over time create disease.
The sounds or music in your environment change your heartbeat, breathing and brainwaves. Some sounds can stimulate the release of stress hormones, which over time, cause all kinds of illness and dis-ease. Other sounds stimulate the relaxation response and the release of hormones that keep you healthy.
If you are committed to your health and wellbeing – it is ESSENTIAL that you become mindful of the sound and music around you. Many of these affect you without you even being aware of it.
The effects of traffic noise has been studied for years by the European Union. Here is what they have found:
Traffic noise is associated with between 200,000 and 250,000 cases of heart disease every year. Of those, 50,000 die.
16 million people can’t sleep
Noise is impacting the health of 125 Million people – That’s 4 times the population of Canada!
And that’s just traffic noise!
In other studies, noise in office spaces with cubicles contributes to a 60% loss in productivity. This is a huge source of stress for those faced with deadlines.
On the other hand, the right choice of sound or music can effortlessly
- create relaxation
- reduce or eliminate pain
- boost your immune system
- diminish depression
- dissolve emotional blocks
- stimulate the natural healing ability of your body
- accelerate growth in consciousness
- give you peace
- and so much more.
Many modalities within the fields of Sound Healing and Sound Therapy are gaining scientific recognition for their effectiveness. And science is continuing to document the profound effect that sound and music has on the human being.
