This morning during meditation following my yoga class, I asked for inspiration for this week’s blog. Now that I am settled on the deck in my ‘outside’ office, listening to the soothing sounds of the fountain in our backyard pond, a quote just appeared as I was responding to a message on Facebook.
“Those things that nature denied to human sight, she revealed to the eyes of the soul.” – Ovid
It got me thinking about how nature has already shown up this morning in the short time since I have been out here.
As I refreshed the water in the birdbath and watered the gardens and roses, I noticed that there were so many spent apple blossoms on the ground that must have been knocked off their branches during a recent hailstorm.
These two apple trees bring us a delightful harvest of apples in the fall, and they are shared with many of our neighbours. As I checked the branches of the trees, there were still many blossoms that were already transforming into tiny apples. The blossoms were so plentiful this year, that there were still many on the trees. Beams of gratitude were sent to the apple trees for their abundance.
As I settled into writing beside the pond, the first visitor to the birdbath is a flicker. This beautiful bird is a member of the woodpecker family. We have a pair of flickers that have been nesting near our home and we are delighted to see them all year round.
They love to drum their music on the top of the light post beside our house or on ours or our neighbour’s roofs. To me, when I see the flicker, it always inspires me to remember to sing and play my own music long and loud or to follow the rhythm of my own drum. Flicker always brings me back to my soul purpose of being and sharing harmony in the world.
As I started to write about the apple trees above, a robin was the next bird to visit the pond garden. It was more interested in looking for worms than to enjoy its morning bath. Most likely to feed hungry young birds. The garden has more than enough worms to go around.
My heart is always filled with hope and joy when I see the first robin in the spring. Their song is filled with so much variety and joy. The robins are always the first ones up in the morning, even before the sun. They love to sing the sun up. I love how they are such perfect reminders to begin the day with joy and with a song in my heart.
After the robin left with its worm, the bushes were filled with the chirps of sparrows as they showed up for their daily sip of water and a bath. They particularly love to have fresh water in the birdbath and will always let me know if it gets dirty or too empty during the day.
Last weekend, we hosted one of our Sound Wellness workshops and we all went out to enjoy our lunch on the deck. It was a beautiful day! Well, the sparrows were chirping very loudly in the bushes beside the birdbath. From the insistence of their chirps, I knew that the birdbath needed more water. After refilling the birdbath with fresh water, the insistent chirping stopped, and they all happily lined up on the fence to take their turn for a bath.
Tina, one of our participants, was amazed at this conversation between feathered friends and human. It has been quite dry here in Calgary for the past few weeks and fresh water in our birdbath is an important resource and need for our little (and bigger) feathered friends.
Well – as I was writing the previous couple of paragraphs, a couple of magpies just flew around the corner of the house and almost bumped into me! All three of us were startled. One of the magpies landed on the fence in front of me and we stared at each other for a few moments.
This may have been the same two magpies that Ed said were across the street having a tug of war over a worm they both wanted for breakfast.
As I wrap up my writing for this blog, about a dozen seagulls just flew over the house. They are still there, only higher in the sky. We have thunderstorms predicted for later today and the wind currents at higher altitudes are quite strong. The gulls are circling, singing, and playing like acrobats in the high breezes. I wish I could take a video of their graceful flow to share with you. They are too far away, so I will leave it to your imagination.
Spending a morning seeing through the eyes of the soul is so refreshing and connecting with our gorgeous planet. Thank you for joining me on this delightful reverie.
