On my last blog, I shared with you some of the most toxic sounds around us.

(If you haven’t read it yet, )

This time, I want to share with you the healthiest sounds.

Chocolate CakeThose that make you just want to take a deep breath and sigh ahhhh.

It is like finding out that chocolate cake is good for you.

These sounds automatically stimulate the relaxation response in your body. Not only that – they help to keep your mind focused.

OMG! Could you use that at work?

The healthiest sounds for you are…

… birdsong, water and wind.

Think about it. The human race evolved surrounded by these sounds.

Even if our ancestors weren’t paying any attention to them, they responded with relaxation or alertness.

For example, if the birds stopped singing while ancient hunters walked through the forest, it was an immediate signal to pay attention. A dangerous animal may be near.

Wind is comprised of a mix of low and high frequency sounds and, depending on the circumstances – whether it is a soft rustling of leaves or a full blown winter blizzard, the wind will create an emotional and physical response.

A soft summer breeze will relax you. The blizzard will get your attention and keep you on alert.

Birdsong consists of high frequency sounds. They are also unpredictable.

Because the brain is always looking for patterns, it goes into alert mode trying to find one. With birdsong, it never will.

So the brain stays in focused alert mode.

Japanese FountainHave you noticed the popularity of little water fountains? For your garden, your home or even your office. You can get them practically anywhere.

The sound of water bubbling or even waves crashing is comprised of low frequency sounds that serve to discharge the nervous system and help create the relaxation response.

Once you are feeling relaxed, your mind begins to settle down. You may find there is less of the ongoing mental chatter. And your mind has more clarity.

Now, if you put the sounds of gentle water together with birdsong, you can have the best of both worlds.

A relaxed body and mental focus.

Now that’s something we can all use on those days when we are feeling frazzled.

If you want to try out birdsong and water, I have created a 60-minute MP3 of these sounds that is available in our store for $9.95.
