Let’s take a look at the software that handles stress or relaxation. The autonomic nervous system has 2 divisions that work like a teeter-totter. One division takes control, and the other yields. And then the other takes control.
The Amygdala largely runs the sympathetic nervous system. When it senses danger, it’s job is to shut off the thinking brain and revert to the emotional brain and memory to react. Hormones like epinephrine (adrenaline) are immediately released that flood your body. This allows you to move quickly when you step out onto the street and you realize a car is coming. Because the amygdala can react much faster than the ‘thinking brain’, this process is sometimes referred to as an amygdala ‘hi-jack’. This is essential because, when in danger, there is no time to think about what to do – you have to react. Fast.
When the danger passes, the amygdala relinquishes control back to the ‘thinking brain’, which returns to the parasympathetic division. Hormone levels return to normal and the body can return to a relaxed state.
Our bodies are designed such that the stress response typically lasts less than 90 seconds.
However, when we are held in a state of fear, our stress levels remain elevated. and the consequences can be severe.
In addition to an increased heart rate, and increased muscle tension, Nitric oxide production is slowed or stopped all together. Nitric oxide is a key component of our immune system, and when production slows, we become much more susceptible to colds and the flu.
One of the most powerful tools is also the simplest – the perfect 5th tuning forks. The perfect 5th is one of the most healing and balancing sounds for the human being. For thousands of years, Western music has been based on the sound of the perfect 5th. Ancient cathedrals were built so the geometry of the space amplified the perfect 5th. This simple tool has been proven to stimulate the nitric oxide cycle in as little a 30 seconds.
Three of the healthiest sounds that there are for the human being are water, birdsong and wind. The low sounds within water calm your nervous system, slow down your heartbeat lowering blood pressure, slow down your breathing and create a shift in brainwave state to the alpha state. A calming relaxation response. At the same time, the birdsong sharpens the mind enhancing focus. and concentration.
Mindfulness can best be described as “being fully present to the moment in non-judgemental awareness.”
It is a powerful tool for creating relaxation, calm, peacefulness, and focus. It can reduce anxiety and depression and reduce stress, while improving attitudes, behaviours, and performance
Perceptions are most often formed in our childhood, and often before age 6. They are like sunglasses that filter our responses based on our experiences, and largely on messages from those we trust, including who we trust. When faced with a situation, our stored memories, and our interpretations of them are the foundation of our perceptions. It is important to note that not all of our perceptions serve us. A memory of a dog chasing you as a child make place a fear of dogs in your memories, yet it may be that the dog simply wanted to play.
Our perceptions around COVID-19 are being framed by the media, because we have no history. For many, an unintended consequence of this reporting has been to create fear and panic.
The module on Perceptual Intelligence offers tools to shift the perception, restoring control back to the parasympathetic division. People will feel calmer, and more relaxed, restoring focus and concentration. By minimizing the stress response, the nitric oxide cycle is restored supporting our immune system.
In 1998, Robert F Furchgott, Louis J Ingnarro, and Ferid Murad won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery that our cells puff and release nitric oxide. Nitric oxide, is a gas that acts as a signalling molecule in the body. Since its discovery, the U.S. government and the pharmaceutical medical complex have spent hundreds of million of dollars investigating this gas. As a result, medications are now widely available to support cardiovascular disease, and others.
Here is a list of just a few of the physical benefits when your cells are producing and releasing nitric oxide.
– Nitric oxide is important for signalling between nerve cells in the brain. The autonomic nervous system is balanced, with better clarity of mind, and less depression. Stress is reduced.
– Nitric oxide is involved in the normal defense against bacterial and parasitic infections. Its anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties support and strengthen the immune system.
– Nitric oxide penetrates into and activates the muscle cells causing relaxation. The smooth muscle cells of our arteries and digestive tract relax. As the artery walls relax, blood flow is eased, reducing blood pressure. As our intestinal tract relaxes, digestion improves, and everything flows easier.
Nitric oxide is a molecule of one atom of Nitrogen and one atom of Oxygen. The release of nitric oxide by our cells is termed “puffing” by scientists to describe the rising and falling of this gas. The puffing cycle is like a wave which takes three minutes to rise, and because it is unstable, it dissipates quickly, taking about three minutes to fall.
This natural cycle in or bodies can be disrupted when we are tired, or stressed, or when we become ill.
Research conducted by Dr John Beaulieu, Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, and Dr. George Stefano, Neuroscience Research Institute, State University of New York, demonstrates that when the Otto 128 Hz tuning forks are placed on bone or connective tissue they resonate throughout our whole body in wave like patterns causing the cells to spike nitric oxide. There has been so much information, and mis-information spread over the past few weeks, that we don’t know what to believe.
Lets start with a few facts.
The virus has been named “SARS-CoV-2” and the disease it causes has been named “novel (new) coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”) It was first detected in China and which has now been detected in more than 100 locations internationally including Canada and the United States.
The origin however, is irrelevant. Because there is little to no pre-existing immunity against this new virus, it has spread worldwide.
Transmission of the disease is primarily though direct contact, such as a handshake, or through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also be transmitted on hard surfaces. If an infected person touches a doorknob, for example, another person could become infected by handling that same doorknob, and then touching their face – especially the eyes, mouth, or nasal area.
The best defense is frequent handwashing with soap (washing for at least 20 seconds) or the use of hand sanitizer. Avoid touching the face, and in particular the eyes, mouth, and nasal area.
Most important, if you are not well, stay home. Do not allow your desire to go out to place others at risk.
Reported illnesses have ranged from very mild (including some with no reported symptoms) to severe, including illness resulting in death. Most cases are mild. An estimated 16% of cases lead to serious illness. Globally, the current mortality rate is between 1% and 1½%.
The wild card however, is that there is no history with COVID-19, and there is no way to predict just how severe it will be. The best course of action is to be mindful of those around you, be diligent in handwashing, and your own hygiene, and above all, not to panic.
